Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday is a day to use up ingredients, with it marking the first day of lent. It has since become the nation's favourite day of the year and an excuse for foodies to try out loads of different recipes from fat to thin pancakes and a variety of toppings. In celebration, we've got some flippin' good facts and recipe ideas for you!

  • Apparently, us Brits use 52 million eggs on pancake day, a whopping 30 million more than on an average day.
  • The average person consumes two pancakes on pancake day, that's 117 million pancakes the UK consumes in total.
  • The record for the highest pancake toss is 9.47 metres, as recorded in New York in 2010 – reckon you can beat it this year?
  • The world’s largest pancake was made in Manchester in 1994. It was 49ft 3in in diameter.
  • In France, it is tradition to make a wish whilst tossing a pancake and holding a coin in the other hand.

The big question of course is do you prefer sweet or savoury? We asked the HGEM team and 87% said sweet, with traditional lemon and sugar being the topping of choice with some variations, including maple syrup and butter, cinnamon sugar, and brown sugar. Other flavour combinations loved by the team:

  • Banoffee with cream
  • Chocolate and banana
  • Peanut butter, banana, honey
  • Marmite
  • Peanut butter and chicken

We hope you all have a great pancake day!
